Artist Statement

It wasn’t until my freshman year in college that someone put a name “dyslexia” to the difficulty I had with reading, writing and other left-brain skills, which I still struggle with today.  Fortunately, a sympathetic lab teacher taught me to focus on the visual and mechanical aspects of whatever I was studying, which enabled me to function using a different perspective.

Over the years, I have come to realize that this coping mechanism has also made me a better photographer.  Rather than just looking at the image in the camera, I naturally search for other perspectives, other ways of seeing what is ordinary.  Each artist makes his or her world their own and, in doing so, takes the viewer to this higher perspective. To take us from here to somewhere else.

While I enjoyed working with traditional film, the advent of digital photography has created opportunities for me to express what I feel and see through Fine Art Photography.

"Elevate the Ordinary"

If we could all tell a story of how we feel about life, I’d wish everyone the storytelling power equivalent to Robert H. Gardner.  His photography is a timeless pointer to how much beauty is inside of us.  It’s not about his cameras, computers or software; it’s about standing still and being grateful for this magnificent adventure – Life.
Robert works in themes that appeal to his authentic interests – He shares who he is.  I enjoy waiting for “what’s next.”   Historical aircraft, bright sneakers, still lakes, global architecture, nature – on and on…his mind is a wonderland.  Enjoy.

The University of the Incarnate Word, Rosenberg School of Optometry has hosted the art of Mr. Robert Gardner for a period of about 12 months. Students, faculty and guests have made very positive comments for the themes, techniques and colors the artist blends to produce images appealing to the discriminating viewer.
At the reception held in honor of the guest artist, attendees were pleased to hear Mr. Gardner succinctly explain the tools and methods he uses for his photographic art. He takes simple images and using his imagination and photographic tools, he elevates his subject into an art form.

With a keen eye for detail and with much passion, Bob Gardner has a distinctive way of capturing an image. I recently purchased one of his amazing canvas of a subtle piece of New York City.
